OK, The chase is on. Target: The Ultimate Home Espresso Machine.

Why Ultimate? Because everything I do IS ultimate. I want the best, I want quality, I want beauty, I want reliability and I want useability. Money is often not a problem, but I will not pay ridiculous prices for stuff. (OK, I might, sometimes... mostly... but even I have a budget. I am not a millionaire). I like quality and I am prepared to pay for it.

Why Home? Because I live at home and I work at home. This is where I am so this is where my machione will be. Duh...

Why Espresso? Because I like espresso and I love Machiato. But they don´t make Machiatomachines now do they?

Why Machine? Because a machine is needed, obviously. Double duh...

In this thread I will explain to all of you why there is no ultimate espresso machine in the world. Not yet, but hopefully there will be one in the future.

So what is needed?

Quality and beauty. It will be made by a well known manufacturer and it will be built to last. I have owned a Isomac Mondiale and the damn thing broke and leaked on me all the time (4 leaks and the pressure gauge broke within 6 months of use). I finally returned it to the store and got a full refund. Crap like that is NOT accepted.

The boilers will be made of stainless steel. Because it is the best. All waterlines will be steel braided high pressure lines, because they last. Every piece used will be top of the line. Because top of the line is best.

The machine will have lots of chrome and stainless steel. It will be polished to a mirror. It won´t be lika a square box, like most of the machines out there today, it will resemble the look of the Isomac Mondiale with rounded shapes. It will be designed to look good, not to be easily mounted so they can be manufactured at the factory as cheaply as possible.

Reliability. It will be made to deliver shot after shot at the correct temperature, so dual boilers are of course a necessity. It will have a PID with small beautiful digital numbers to show the temperature discretly at all times. Not like the huge numbers on the Brewtus II. You can see them from across the room, like that was needed...

It will of course be directly connected to the waterline, because I do not want to fill the tank. Ever. And I do not want the machine shutting off in the middle of my dearest espresso shot: "Looking good, looking good, the.... the water is out..."

No sir, I do not.

Useability. I want useability. I want the machine to have one of those quick steam valves that they use on both the Mondiale and the GS3. The ones you just pull and steam away! Yesss!

I want a pretty wide machine. I don´t want a small narrow piece of chunky metal. I want some space to work. It has to be about 35-40 cm wide. That is wide enough so you can put the steaming pitcher on the driptray and it wont have to fight with the cups or with the portafilterhandle for space.

I think I want a lever. I lika levers. I like the lever on all of the E61 groupheads. I want to have the last touch on how long a shot will be, if I want to. there could also be programmable buttons that extract a single or a double shot. Why not both buttons AND a lever? The best of both worlds.

I know, I know, all automatically dosed machines have a manual button... but make the button look loke a lever instead then? I said I wanted a lever, get with the program here. We are building THE ultimate machine, and it has both buttons and a lever. Deal with it.

The driptray will be huge, and have the option for direct plumbing.

The steam wand will definetly be a "no-burn" wand. Yessss!

It doesen´t need to be devouring electricity. Both boilers will of course be well insulated to prevent unwanted heat loss. some heat will of course be well directed to the cup warming surface, but not too much. I wont need fast heating on the cups, I just use a few each day. It doesen´t need a huge huge capacity. You could step down the sizes of the boiler on the GS3 a bit I think, and it would still perform good enough for home use. Smaller boilers heats up faster than big, and eat less electricity I guess.

It will have a rotary pump. Because they are quiet and they are good. And that is enough reasons already.

It won´t need any flushing at all. It will work flawless with the correct temperature without any needs for heating or cooling flushes.

It will definetly have a exposed grouphead. Not one hidden under a damned roof. Exposed, out in the open like the E61 , or the grouphead on the GS3.

The semi-ultimate machines of today are:

The Expobar Brewtus II. Why isn´t this ultimate then? Because it isn´t beautiful enough. It needs a warming flush. It has a vibratory pump and... That is about it I think. No, it isn´t wide enough either, and the build quality could be better, with steel braided hoses and such.

The La Marzocco GS3. Why isn´t this ultimate then? Because it is almost a bit too big. It could have a bit smaller boilers and it could be a bit less wide. It should have insulation on both boilers I think, but because it is so new nobody knows exactly what is insulated and how hot it gets.

I am afraid it gets a bit too hot. During the summer it probably produces unwanted huge amounts of heat, eating up electricity, making my AC work harder, eating more electricity... It could be a bit cheaper, it is VERY expensive.

It could look a bit better... more rounded shapes and soft corners. Instead of all those corners on the sides on the GS3, why not use a soft sweeping line? And those straight steamwands and watertaps... Why not put a little curve on it? Make it look better.

And lets not forget my magical lever for the manual espresso extraction. And the manual extraction should have pre-infusion enabled also. This is not the case on the GS3 of today.

So My decision will be: Probably both the Brewtus II and the GS3. First the Brewtus II, because the GS3 is all new and I bet they will run into some problems when starting to massproduce the stuff. And I cannot really afford a GS3 at the moment.

I wouldn´t be surprised if within 2 years I have switched to the GS3. But for now I will have to go with the Brewtus, since it is dirt-cheap in comparison to the GS3. It costs less than 1/3 of what the GS3 will cost...

Men man måste ju rengöra spridaren, ååååååh!
